About Us
Mohan Kanagasundaram and Martin Brunet started GP Toolbox in 2023 in order to help trainees face the challenge of the new Simulated Consultation Assessment (SCA) examination set by the RCGP, with the first sitting for GP trainees in November 2023.

Mohan and Martin first met as GP trainees on their own training scheme in 2000 and have been training GPs ever since, often working together in their Deanery roles. Martin was one of the GP Training Programme Directors on the Guildford scheme for 10 years before stepping down to write a book on the GP Consultation, while Mohan led the simulation work for the Deanery and has worked extensively with trainees who had difficulties passing the previous CSA and RCA exams.
The philosophy of the course is that good consulting skills are essential for being an effective GP, and that the best way to pass the SCA is to learn the skills for great consulting. GPs all develop a 'Toolbox' of communication skills - phrases they use, questions to ask, use of non-verbals etc. Our aim at GP Toolbox is that you will leave our course with your Toolbox better equipped that when you started!

The emphasis on the course will be on developing great consulting skills rather than teaching the mechanics of the exam, since this information is freely available from the RCGP website and we want to spend as much time as possible focusing learning the consultation.

Martin Brunet
Martin is the author of The GP Consultation Reimagined, a Tale of Two Houses. The book outlines the Two Houses model of the the GP consultation, which is a fresh and highly visual way of looking at how GPs consult. It uses the imagery of two houses to explore the two key objectives in any consultation - which are to work out what matters to the patient and the doctor, and then to decide together what to do about it. The House of Discovery is where we work out what matters, and the House of Decision is where we decide what to do about it. Each house brings its own challenges which we need to learn to recognise and develop the skills to navigate.
